The Reason You Can Count on God

There was a point in my life when my word didn’t mean very much. Just because I said I would do something didn’t mean I would follow through and do it.

I didn’t mean to let people down…or lie to them. It’s just that if I didn’t feel like doing what I had promised…I wouldn’t do it. Or I was unable to follow-through when the time came, either because I hadn’t made the necessary preparations, or I didn’t have the finances, or a better offer came along. I wasn’t a very dependable person.

I also had a habit of making promises I couldn’t fulfill. This was more with people I loved and cared about. Not because I didn’t want to make good on them, but because I hadn’t counted the cost of the promise. I hadn’t a clue how I would fulfill these promises, but I spoke up anyway because I wanted to see the people I loved happy, with good things that they needed & wanted.

Through God’s mercy and help, I’m no longer that person. And the reason I’m not is because God is dependable. He is trustworthy. When He speaks a word, He follows through, because He doesn’t make idle promises. Nor does He lie or change His mind.

Several versions of Psalm 138:2 express the following:

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and give thanks unto thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.English Revised Version

or this:

“I will worship toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name
For Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

I really like the New Living Translation’s verse:

“I bow before Your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for Your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for Your promises are backed by all the honor of Your name.

As David poured out his gratitude before God, he made known the reason for his praises: God keeps His word, and so His name is great among His people & among the nations.

The thought of not keeping my word now scares me, because I want to be known as someone dependable & trustworthy. I want to be considered faithful. When I make a promise to my children, I want them to believe it will be fulfilled, because they know I won’t lie to them. Because they have seen me come through for them time & time again.

This is how it is with God- only more so, because He never fails us. His name & His reputation are unfailingly good. Faithfulness & dependability are inherent in His very nature. He does not lie! When God speaks, He does what He promises!

Our part is to drive out the doubts that plague us about God’s faithfulness. We do this by learning what His word says on this subject; then by meditating on it and allowing the Holy Spirit to confirm the truth of God’s word. Then by speaking it out whenever doubt and unbelief try to take hold in our thoughts. Wonderful things start to happen when we simply believe God!

I want to share some valuable verses about God’s integrity & His faithfulness. I pray that you take them to heart & see them as the precious treasure that they are.  Praying that your faith increases as you trust in Him ❤
